Motor Tuning — Step-by-Step Guide
A beginner's walkthrough for tuning a MASSO AC servo motor for the first time, using MASSO Motor Studio and the drive front panel.
Who this is for: anyone setting up a servo axis for the first time and tuning it from scratch. Before you start: the motor and drive must be wired and powered, and MASSO Motor Studio must be installed on a PC connected to the drive via USB. Work through the six steps below in order — each one depends on the last.
Overview — the six tuning stages
Each stage builds on the one before it. Don't skip ahead — a step later in the sequence (like auto-tune) won't give good results if an earlier one (like the inertia test) hasn't been done.
- Jog the motor (Trial Run) — confirm the wiring between drive and motor is correct.
- M.I. Guide — set pulses per revolution and configure inputs/outputs.
- Update drive parameters — switch the drive into the correct control mode for tuning.
- Inertia test — let the drive measure how much load (inertia) it's driving.
- FFT check — scan for resonant frequencies before tuning further.
- Auto-tune (F20-ADV) — run the drive's own auto-tune routine from its front panel.
1 - Jog the Motor — Trial Run
Reason: jog the motor to confirm the wiring between the motor and drive is correct before doing anything else.
- E-stop: pressed in
- Screen: Ready
- Open MASSO Motor Studio and select Trial Run.
- Disable the drive.
- Set the RPM and acceleration.
- Enable the drive.
- Carefully jog left and right to check the motor turns both ways.

Popular settings
- Safe RPM: 300–800 (work up to it carefully).
- Safe acceleration: not less than 50. The lower the number, the faster the acceleration and the faster the motor stops.
- Be careful not to jog the axis past its physical limits.
2 - M.I. Guide — PPR & I/O Setup
Reason: adjust the motor's pulses per revolution and set up the drive's inputs and outputs.
- E-stop: in or out
- Screen: Ready or Run
- Open M.I. Guide in MASSO Motor Studio.
- Step through each stage of the guide.

3 - Update Drive Parameters
Reason: switch the drive into the mode where it uses the feedback signal to tune itself.
- Open Parameters.
- Select Pn01 from the group list on the left.
- Change P01-03 to 19, then press the write button.
- Change P01-02 to 1, then press the write button.


4 - Inertia Test
Reason: calculate the authority the motor has over the axis — how much load it's really driving.
- E-stop: pressed in
- Screen: Ready
- Open Inertia ID.
- Press Write, then press Next.
- Press Enable, then press Turn until WRITE shows.
- Press WRITE, then exit the screen.

5 - FFT Check
Reason: Check the motor/axis for resonant frequencies before tuning further.
- E-stop: pressed in
Screen: Ready
- Press Enable, then press Start.
- Press Write In when complete.

6 - Auto-Tune on the Drive (F20-ADV)
Reason: Run the drive's own auto-tune routine. MASSO Motor Studio is no longer needed at this point — the USB cable can be disconnected.
- E-stop: pressed in
- Screen: Ready
- On the drive's front panel, press the M button until F shows on the left.
- Press up/down until F20-ADV shows.
- Press ENT.
- Press and hold ENT — you'll hear the drive buzz.
- Press the up arrow to start the tuning.
- When tuning finishes, press and hold ENT to confirm.
