WABECO Tool Turret

Setting up the Tool Changer
- Connect your stepper motor to the Y-axis outputs on MASSO
- Go to the F1-Setup screen
- Open the Tool Changer window
- Press Enter to open the Tool Changer list
- Select WABECO Tool Turret from the list and double click to open the settings window
Number of Tools
Enter the number of tools in your tool changer.
You can enter a minimum of 2 tools and a maximum of 12 tools.
Feedrate
The feed rate is measured in tools per minute.
To calculate the time for one full revolution, use the following formula:
60 seconds ÷ feed rate (tools per minute) × number of tools = time in seconds for one full revolution
Acceleration
This is the acceleration rate of the stepper motor, measured in tools per second².
Motor: Steps for Single Tool Move
The number of steps required to move between tool positions.
Motor: Extra Steps for Tool Change
After reaching the required tool position, this is the number of extra steps used to move past the locking position. This ensures the tool locks correctly when reversing.
Motor: Reverse Steps for Locking
The number of steps required to reverse and lock the tool into position.
Tool Changer Logic
After all machine axes are homed according to the homing sequence, the tool changer rotates the stepper motor until the home (Tool 1) signal is detected.
Homing Sequence
- Tool Changer - Output 1 goes HIGH and waits 500 ms for the locking pin to move to the unlock position
- The motor rotates forward
- Tool Changer - Input 1 goes HIGH when the homing sensor is triggered
- Tool Changer - Output 1 goes LOW and waits 1000 ms for the locking pin to move to the lock position
- The motor reverses the specified number of steps to lock the tool
- The tool number is updated to Tool 1 on the MASSO screen
- Homing is complete
If a valid home signal is not received within one full revolution, the controller will display an alarm.
Tool Change Sequence
On an M6 tool change command:
- Tool Changer - Output 1 goes HIGH and waits 500 ms for the locking pin to move to the unlock position
- The motor rotates forward the required number of steps to reach the new tool position
- Tool Changer - Output 1 goes LOW and waits 1000 ms for the locking pin to move to the lock position
- The motor reverses the specified number of steps to lock the tool
- The tool number is updated to the new tool
- Tool change is complete
Input Signals
Wire the homing sensor input and assign it in MASSO as follows:
- Tool Changer - Input 1 for turret home position sensor
This input is normally LOW and changes to HIGH when triggered.
Output Signals
- The turret stepper motor STEP and DIRECTION signals must be wired to the MASSO Y-axis STEP and DIRECTION outputs
- Tool Changer - Output 1 is used for the locking pin
If your tool changer does not have a locking pin solenoid, this output does not need to be assigned.
