The G40 command is used to turn off cutter compensation that was previously enabled using G41 or G42.

G40 is a modal command and belongs to Group 7.

After cutter compensation has been cancelled, both the X and Y coordinates must be specified on the next move to ensure the tool moves to a safe and predictable location.
